Many people have said that they wana sprite making program or..whatever...I don't think there are such programs now, just need to use any paint programs like paintshop pro or photoshop...
Well, I personally used paintshop pro 7.0...Dunno why, I find 8 kinda sucks...
Anyway, heres the guide...for paint shop pro...Think I'll do one on photoshop when i've the time...
Somethings you need to take note of:
1)Some psp or photoshop knowledge
2)Sprite frames must be in bmp format, 256 colors, 8 bit...
3)1st color of the palette must be the color of the background color, only then will it appear as a transparent image...
4)A little bit of talent...Just joking...Lol...
Try getting PaintShop Pro 7.0 if you really do follow this guide...
Ok...I'll skip some parts, as there really aren't much to say about the spriting process and people do it differently...You could try editting a NPC sprite to make it into your own, for starters...Well if you're better, you could try spriting from scratch...
Ok...Here's my example...I take one of the sprites I made..., which I've currently completed (Spriting process)...
Try changing the background color to colors which you don't use in the sprite...If you've ever checked out Gravity's sprites, they normally use colors like pink...Thats because they don't use it often...To summarize, just don't use a color which you have used in your sprite as background color...
I changed it to a light green color which I haven't used in my sprite... http://img108.exs.cx/img108/8937/ztest2.gif
Its currently in 16 million colors, 24 bit, and this will not let the sprite work in game... http://img108.exs.cx/img108/9773/ztest2.jpg
Convert it to 256 colors, 8 bit, by clicking on Colors>Decrease Color Depth>256 Colors (8 Bit)...If you don't get it, then check this out... http://img108.exs.cx/img108/7223/ztest3.jpg
After that is done, the palette will become something like this: http://img108.exs.cx/img108/6443/ztest4.jpg
After converting, save the palette somewhere...http://img108.exs.cx/img108/9554/ztest5.jpg
Now..You gotta go to the folder which you saved the palette file to...Once you locate it, open the palette file with Notepad...Make sure you do know the RGB values of your back ground color, in my case, is 200 248 211...Open your palette file, you will see alot of numbers like these:http://img108.exs.cx/img108/2900/ztest6.jpg
These are actually the RGB value of the color...As I've said, the 1st color in the palette must be the background color...So, do a switch...0 0 0 is black color, so you find your background color value and switch it with the 1st color, which is black...Make sure you don't simply just replace black color, you just do a switch...So that makes 200 248 211 the 1st color, while 0 0 0 somewhere in the middle...(200 248 211 is my example of a background color...)
Once your done with that, close it and save it...Now back to paintshop pro...For the file you are editting, click on Colors>Load Palette... http://img108.exs.cx/img108/1780/ztest7.jpg
After that, you will see that your initial palette which you have saved, and the editted one, the only difference is that there is a color switch...From http://img108.exs.cx/img108/6443/ztest4.jpg to http://img108.exs.cx/img108/1146/ztest8.jpg...See the difference?
Your sprite is now done...
Save it in bmp format, which I'm sure you know how to...If not, just go to save as, rename your file if you want to, and save it under bmp...
Now, for making the bmp file into spr file, get the following sprite encoder/decoder program...I've attached it below...I did not made this program and do not claim it as my own...
Encoding is simply converting your bitmap files into sprite files, format spr, while decoding is simply taking out all the bmp frames from a sprite file...
The program is simple to use...Just click on Add, then choose the bmp file you want, then type in the directory and filename of your sprite in the box in the middle...If you wanna test it in game, try replacing an existing NPC sprite name in ASCII format and place it in your data folder...
After doing the above step, click on Encode...and its done! Yatta!!!

Phew...Haven't done such a long guide in aeons...Hope that it will come in handy to you people...
Thanks
