Onboard Ethernet or PCI Ethernet?

I am curious if anyone knows for certain if an onboard Ethernet LAN port is faster or slower (at processing data, etc.) than a PCI Ethernet card (not PCI-Express).

I am presuming the PCI card is faster, since the entire card is donated just to that port and not to other things, such as the motherboard is.

The PCI seems to be faster on my comp but there was a time when the onboard one was faster i have a 10/100/1000 ethernet card from Netgear and it does transfer data alot faster for me then the onboard one.

The PCI transfers data faster on my comp then the onboard one does i have a netgear on my comp. But you also have to take one thing into view is your lan card older than your motherboard cause i think the new motherboards have a Lan ver6 and its faster then some of the old cards.

Yeah it probably is but i doubt it will matter unless your doing ALOT of file transfers between computers.

I have no idea of the architecture behind onboard chips, but onboard stuff (such as network or soundchips) may well be independent of the PCI bus. If so, then in a situation where the computer is also making use of other PCI cards, having an onboard network chip would probably be better. This is because only one device can access the PCI bus at a time, and if another device was using the bus when you were wanting to send a packet, there would be additional latency due to waiting for the bus to be available.

Of course, if you have other onboard chips such as sound in addition to network, these might all be connected to a single bus, giving the same problem again.

Someone who knows more about computer architecture will have to answer this one.

To be utterly and completely honest. :P

Anything that is integrated, is technology that was incorporated when the motherbaord underwent inspection, and finally to you. So, most things you find on a motherboard will be considered obsolete...unless of course you buy a new MoBo every week.

PCI is a very interesting system, how about this fact.

PCI Video Cards can operate just as fast as AGP 8x, so why the big rush to AGP? It's the money...I tell you...PCI rules...

It used to be that you had to buy everything PCI, it was a standard.

now you have choices, and a lot more money than that piggy bank you saved for 20 years.

IS integrated better? What about PCI?

If you look at the way your MoBo works, then you will find that the bus speed from PCI is a little faster, this being because the firmware that is programmed for it makes it so, as no questions.

PCI also, however "slow" you think it was, can operate at blazing speeds, just think about an ethernet card...

I recommend using a PCI ethernet card, unless you have a "giga-bit" certified integrated LAN...which would be awesome at any level.

Any questions...I can get technical..

Thanks. I decided to go with a motherboard with dual on-board gigabit ethernet anyway. ^_^
