"Harry Potter meets Love Hina." That's what most say to describe the wild, hilarious, and adventurous world of Negima (also known as Mahou Sensei Negima, Magister Negi Magi, and negi or msn for short). It's a pretty fair statement too because there is a very high focus on magic because of Negi Springfield, our 10-year old magi, teacher, and friend, and also later on from his students. There's also a sense of adventure, exploration, and character building that you'd find from reading a Harry Potter book as well, but alas (Earwax!) because of the brilliant mind of Ken Akumatsu, creator of Love Hina and all that is holy, that is where the two worlds part (thank god!). First of all if you're familiar with Love Hina or any other Akumatsu works then you already know the high amount of humorous fanservice you're getting yourself into. Negima isn't a straight romance/comedy (look to Love Hina if that's what you want) but it's obvious where it gets its roots from. Looking at the promos the anime is no stranger to the manga's ecchiness. There's a reason this manga is featured in Shonen Magazine Comics.
OVERVIEW!!
So what of Negima? How'd it all start? Well as I said Negi Springfield is our main character. He's a 10 years old boy who has just graduated from magic school and is about to go on his training assignment as dictated on his mystic diploma. As it slowly reveals his destination Negi and his sisters are shocked at the revelation. He's to be a teacher in Japan! A 10-year old teacher of an all girl middleschool class at Mahora Gakuen to be precise. After much arguing, debating, and fainting (a whole 2 pages worth!) he accepts his assignment. Fortunate he's in good hands for an old friend of Magus (the head wizard at Negi's magic school) runs Mahora Gakuen. Finally Negi arrives at his destination, gets familiar with faculty and a few select students, and is led to the entrance of classroom 2-A where he will be in charge of 31 beautiful girls, all with unique personalities who each have their share of trials and tribulations throughout the story.
31 girls, eh? That's a lot to handle; even more so for someone as young as Negi. Best bet is to befriend a few key ones and the rest will follow, right? Good plan, but knowing Akumatsu the sailing won't go so smoothly. Wrong! The girls find Negi absolutely adorable and cannot refuse to glomp and drool all over him. Still, cuteness only goes so far. Negi appreciates the kindness but would rather be treated more than just a puppy for the girls to doll. He needs serious friends among the ranks and fast!
The first girl he befriends is Kagurazaka Asuna. She's easily spotted with her bell hair ties and her different-colored irises. She's also what many call the spiritual successor to Naru from Love Hina in both looks and personality. Now this wasn't an easy task for Negi. At first Asuna hated him with all of her soul. He managed to embarrass her in front of her crush, Takahata-sensei, by blowing away most of her clothing with one mighty sneeze revealing her wool bear panties. Much to her surprise and horror the headmaster then assigned Negi to dorm with her and her roommate Konoka. She's less than thrilled but suddenly things get interesting. Negi lets his magic slip twice in front of her and she's onto his cover-up. Eventually she makes him spill the beans about being a mage. OHO! A chance to blackmail him and make his life living hell! Negi sees her intentions and decides making her memory disappear is in order, but instead he accidentally makes her clothing disappear and guess who shows up in such a timely manner? It's another embare-assing moment for Asuna in front of Takahata-sensei! =D
So after all these screw-ups how could Negi possibly redeem himself? He can't magically produce money or a love potion for Asuna, but he honestly wants to help her. He didn't mean to do all those things. The wardrobe malfunctions were all magical accidents. After some more failed attempts of cheering Asuna up with his magic he finally comforts her with words from his grandpa that courage of the heart would do her best. Friend++;
Negi now finds himself living the life of a teacher while trying keeping his mage status a secret. Although it takes him a bit, he eventually settles in and the stundents accept him, and as time moves on he will earn more trust and more friends among them through magic mishaps, adventures through an abandoned library, battling against other facting magical powers, and much more. There's comedy, magic, adventure, and romance to be had in Magister Negi Magi. Be sure to watch!
